Captain Tony Bozzella
What's on the water

Great time of the year to get out in the mid day sun on the mud flats and sight fish for redfish. The water is very clear this time of year and it allows the angler, with proper sun and wind, you can truly sight cast. As the day progresses the sun will warm the mud and the Redfish become alittle more active. When you find a fish be on the lookout for another, or if you hook one blind casting throw again to the same spot. Redfish usually school up at this time of year. A 1/4 oz TBS Jig paired with a mud minnow or shrimp will do the job in the backcountry. When you cast, make sure your first cast is a good one landing where you want it, and do not move the bait if you know fish are schooled there. The fish will find it. Be patient and keep the slack out and a tight line so you can feel the take and drop your tip and wait to you feel the weight on the line, then set the hook hard! If you use shrimp it will be a great time to pick up a black drum with your catch. Drum do not take mud minnows. But, what is good about mud minnows, they are quite hardy and kick around on the hook and cause attention to themselves for those hard fighting Redfish. Trout will be around, with most small or even under size, but can be fun with high numbers. Jig and shrimp combo's will do fine. A jig and soft plastic worked slowly along the bottom of creek bends and holes can produce well. When you find a trout, pepper the area with casts, they will school up tight as well and the action can be fast. There will be other species available like sheephead, flounder, and bluefish. Sheephead should be faily plentiful around the oyster beds and structure. Chumming with crushed oysters could help the bite. Fiddlers on the new TBS sheephead jigs will be a great choice. Blues will be scattered over most inlets and creek mouths. A jig or diving mullet immatation will also do the job. Blues are not picky. Get out and fish, winter is another great time of the year!!
